What Is It?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small flowering shrub with reddish fruit, also known as “winter cherry” or “Indian ginseng.” The species name somnifera means “sleep-inducing” in Latin, but in Ayurveda Ashwagandha root is referred to as balya, or “giving strength or stamina.” These opposing attributes should give some insight into Ashwagandha’s uniqueness: a capacity to produce feelings of both energy and calm — at the same time. These attributes might seem like they’re on opposite sides of the scale, but imagine the point at which both sides are equal. What is achieved? Balance.
A Natural Adaptogen
Adaptogens have been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to restore balance by boosting energy and resilience in response to stress. They’re a unique combination of amino acids, vitamins, and herbs that affect the adrenal system — the system in charge of managing the body’s hormonal stress response. Adaptogens help the body cope with external stresses, such as environmental toxins, and internal stresses, such as anxiety and insomnia. Ashwagandha has been studied extensively for its adaptogenic qualities, specifically its ability to suppress and reduce cortisol levels in the body.
Cortisol’s Relationship to Stress, Weight & Fatigue
Have you ever noticed that almost everyone these days is “stressed out?” The World Health Organization reports that stress-related disorders have become the number one health problem of the last decade. Stress can cause anxiety, sleeplessness, difficulty concentrating, a depressed mood, and is considered a major contributing factor to global obesity.
What is the physiological cause of many of these effects? The answer is cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stressful events. High cortisol levels are responsible for that panicked “fight or flight” feeling, and can promote elevated blood sugar levels, disruptions in sleep, and stress-induced eating.
Because these issues afflict so many people on such a grand scale, we want to ensure that the Ashwagandha in our Whole Body Vitality Drink is an ingredient you can trust. That’s why we use EssentraTrim®, the only ashwagandha extract clinically proven to reduce cortisol levels and help counteract the negative effects of stress.

The “Less Stress” Way to Healthy Energy
We all know that a nutritious diet and exercise are the foundations of a healthy lifestyle, but making smart choices can be tough when you’re feeling low on energy. The EssentraTrim® Ashwagandha in NatureWise Energy doesn’t just counteract the negative effects of cortisol and stress, it helps to provide a natural, sustained boost to flagging energy levels. This type of energy enhancement doesn’t come with the nervousness and jitters that can accompany large doses of added caffeine; EssentraTrim’s patented bioactives mimic the body’s own hormone levels to counteract fatigue.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, people taking EssentraTrim® felt their energy levels increase by an average of 53% — with no reported side effects. This energizing effect was accompanied by a rise in dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) serum levels, the energizing hormone that becomes depleted when people are stressed and fatigued.
It’s All In the Balance
According to Ayurveda, our bodies are manifestations of the foods we eat. What we ingest is metabolized into the energy that feeds our cells, tissues, and organs. Everyday we require essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to maintain energy and thrive in a busy, stressed-out world.
The ashwagandha in NatureWise Whole Body Vitality Drinks helps to restore energy and counteract fatigue — with an added boost from organic tea and guarana, and a unique flavor that’s in perfect balance.
