Ever heard of Kratom? We hadn’t either. But we couldn’t ignore recent headlines about the plant and its potentially-dangerous, opioid-like effects.

Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia that has been used as an herbal supplement to increase energy, relieve pain, and provide relief for a number of mental and physical conditions. It has also been used to treat opioid withdrawal symptoms.

But new research has led the FDA to declare that kratom itself has properties similar to opiods, and to urge people to stop using the herb. The FDA says that there is no sound evidence to support the use of kratom as a treatment for opioid withdrawal, and that in fact, serious safety risks exist. There have actually be 44 reported deaths associated with the use of kratom.
